A Ninth Grader Drinks Excessively With His Classmates, Experiences Alcohol Poisoning, And Finds Out That Listening In Class Can Make A Difference

Andy was a ninth grader who usually seemed to be living on the edge. Andy had a risk taking personality and typically wanted to do what his older brothers were doing. The essential problem with this was that all three of his brothers were at least 21 years old and were therefore able from a legal vantage point to operate a vehicle and to drink alcohol.

Andy, then again, had a difficult time accepting the fact that as a fifteen-year-old adolescent he should not be drinking. In fact, however, Andy usually drank with his pals after school, especially on the weekends.

One weekend, Andy decided to drive around with some of his older pals. One of his guy friends was old enough to buy alcohol. After purchasing some beer, wine, and wine coolers, Andy and all of the guys went to a public park and drank for something like two hours.

After drinking around nine bottles of beer, Andy started to feel nauseous and then vomited. When he passed out on the baseball field, one of his drinking buddies called 911 for immediate help. It was fortunate that the call for medical assistance was made because when his cronies went to the hospital to see Andy, they discovered that Andy had been manifesting alcohol poisoning symptoms. Simply put, Andy had experienced an alcohol overdose.

After receiving alcohol poisoning treatment, Andy was truthfully startled to hear that he had overdosed on alcohol because he "only" had around five or ten alcoholic beverages. When he explained this to the attending physician at the hospital, on the other hand, the physician told Andy that drinking five or ten glasses of wine over a two or three hour time frame could actually be substantially more alcohol than can be metabolized by the body. The physician further stated how excessive alcohol can cause the brain to shut down a person's respiratory system and that when this comes about, an individual can die.

This was the first sign to Andy that he was drinking in a risky manner and that there are effects for such activities. The physician told Andy that he was a lucky individual because he almost perished from an alcohol overdose the night before.

The healthcare practitioner also talked to Andy's parents and suggested that they get alcohol counseling for Andy. His parents were delighted that Andy was all right and told the healthcare practitioner that they would get Andy alcohol counseling.

While talking to his parents, Andy notified them that there must be a good reason why he did not die and that he felt a sense of thankfulness that he was still alive. He also told his parents that the strangest part about the entire drinking occurrence was that he had learned about alcohol poisoning the previous six week grading period in health class.

At the time, what his health teacher, Mr. Johnson, was articulating didn't seem to make too much sense to Andy. Now that he almost died, however, he felt that he should have listened more closely in Mr. Johnson's health class and applied what he had learned to his daily living.

Andy told his parents that he couldn't wait to go to school and make an apology to Mr. Johnson for not paying more attention to something that was as relevant as learning about alcohol poisoning.
