A Physical Education And Health Teacher Teaches Her Students About The Significant Issues Involved In Alcohol Dependency Signs
Miss Jackson was a health instructor at the most popular private high school in the local community. Although she had been teaching for only one year, she had already achieved a reputation as a teacher with instructional approaches that inspired and motivated pupils to think and to learn.
For instance, one Tuesday afternoon she addressed her students and articulated the following: "For the next four or five days we are going to learn about some usual alcoholism signs from a more broad-based perspective and we are also going to learn about several of the most common signs of alcoholism from a more specific viewpoint."
"Not all of these alcoholism warning signs will definitely prove that someone with a drinking problem is an individual who is alcohol dependent, but the more signs that an individual manifests, the greater the likelihood that he or she is an individual who is addicted to alcohol."
Miss Jackson then told the class that each student would be accountable for investigating three alcohol addiction signs and then presenting his or her conclusions to the other members in the class via a seven minute oral presentation.
The day after all of the students completed their presentations, Miss Jackson passed out a sheet of paper with a list of all the alcohol addiction signs that were discussed and presented in the presentations and in class. Miss Jackson then asked her pupils to go over the list and rank the top six alcoholism signs that were most indicative of alcoholism. After approximately five minutes, Miss Jackson collected the sheets of paper and explained to the pupils in her class that after she evaluates the numbers, she will present her findings the next school day.
Miss Jackson told her students to look over the data on the sheet of paper she handed out and then to raise their hand if they had any concerns, questions, or issues. Within 40 or 50 seconds, virtually every pupil in the class raised his or her hand. It was obvious that the students had some questions, concerns, or issues about their results versus the answers given by the alcoholism authorities. For example, virtually every individual in the classroom had an issue with the highest ranking answer given by the alcoholism authorities, namely, "Do you feel very ill when you stop drinking?"
Miss Jackson then explained to her pupils why this answer was the most unambiguous sign of alcohol dependency. She stressed the fact that the key difference between alcoholism and alcohol abuse is the physical addiction that is experienced with alcoholism and not with alcohol abuse.
Fundamentally this means that when an individual who is alcohol dependent abruptly quits drinking, she or he will experience alcohol withdrawal symptoms. After Miss Jackson explained the importance of alcohol withdrawal symptoms in the life of the individual who is addicted to alcohol, the students started to comprehend the essential difference between alcohol abuse and alcohol addiction.
A few minutes later the bell rang, signaling the end of class. Based on the excitement exhibited by the students when they were leaving the classroom, Miss Jackson knew that she had inspired and encouraged her pupils to stop and think about a critical social problem and health issue that exists in our society.
