Frank and Linda have been going out for five-and-a-half years. They met while enrolled in the same Spanish class at a relatively large, rural, private liberal arts college located in the Eastern part of the United States. While they were just good pals at first, they eventually started dating when they were in their first year of college.

Because both of them came from very strict backgrounds, neither one of them drank much social drinking stage when they first began dating. As the time proceeded, nonetheless, they began to go to more football bashes, sorority and fraternity parties, happy hours, and keg parties. As a result, they progressively began to drink more as time went by.

After they graduated from college, they both found jobs in a relatively small city that was about fifty-five miles from their undergraduate college. Then they finally decided to move into the same apartment together.

For Frank and Linda the thought of buying a new house and having children was this "trigger." Once they came to this conclusion, they informed their drinking buddies about their their goal of buying or building a new house, about their plans to start a family, and about their marital plans. They also told their drinking buddies that they still wanted to hang around with them but that they would be drinking in strict moderation from this moment forward so that they could start realizing their future hopes, dreams, and plans.

Surprisingly, all of their friends expressed relief because they too had been contemplating their lives and concluded that their life-styles were much too frequently focused on drinking. They also thought that they would have to change substantially if they were to become more accountable and show more respect for their health, their careers, and for their goals in the next five or ten years.

After their frank discussion with their buddies about their dreams, hopes, and plans, Frank and Linda essentially started to have more significant relationships with all of their friends. The fundamental reason for this was the fact that all of them were on the same wave-length regarding their heavy drinking and their relatively short and long-term plans, aspirations, and goals.
