A Young Man Requires Therapy For His Extreme Depression, Relationship Difficulties, And For His Chemical Dependency

Around three months ago I had lunch with a thirty-one-year-old male named Benjamin who suffers from severe depression, has relationship problems, and who is addicted to drugs and alcohol. As affirmed by Benjamin, it is his alcoholism and drug addiction and his intense depression that has had the most to do with his recurring relationship problems.

As declared by Benjamin, he is so defeated by his relationship issues and by both of his medical problems that he in actual fact has little or no reason to complete much of anything. What is especially sad about this is that earlier in his life, Benjamin completed five semesters of grad school in law.

Benjamin's situation makes me question if he is an illustration of an individual who can look within and perceive his drinking problems and substance abuse and do something positive about these difficulties. Or, conversely, if he is someone who has to hit the very bottom before he gets drug and alcohol dependency rehabilitation that results in long lasting recovery.

It may be asked how treatment would help his alcohol and drug dependency. In a similar way, he would also learn that messing around with one or both of these unhealthy circumstances is the map to legal problems, deteriorating health, a premature death, poor work and school performance, shattered relationships, and financial difficulties. Fourth, therapy for his depression and for his relationship problems might help him deal with these medical conditions more successfully and help create less of a need for him to engage in additive behavior. And finally, in rehab he could also learn more about the various symptoms of alcoholism that he has displayed.

Because Benjamin lacks the ambition to accomplish much of anything in his life, it is apparent that he definitely needs a little hope for a more fulfilling life. And the sad thing is that hope is almost everywhere around Benjamin if he could only get to the point in life to get the treatment he needs for his extreme depression and drug dependence and alcohol addiction and continue with his treatment routine.

Benjamin is simply too young to be defeated in life. He doesn't realize this right now but if he can learn how to remove himself from alcohol and drugs through alcohol and drug rehabilitation and get the counseling he needs for his severe depression, he can reorient his life and start living with passion, direction, and with self-respect.

Better relationships, positive change, self esteem, and a wonderful life are clearly a reality for Benjamin. But only if he can become motivated to get the professional treatment he needs, follow through with his treatment protocol, live his life in a dependency-free and healthy manner, and learn how to acquire a more positive attitude about his existence.
