Running will wear out your knees, as will many other of the popular cardio activities, but swimming does not compress the joints, so there is not any compromise to the health benefits that it holds. I love this cardiovascular activity, but it may not be the appropriate one for you. The best recommendation I have is to join a gym for a month. The majority of gyms even offer a free consultation with a fitness trainer. If that's the case be sure and tell your fitness trainer that you want to try lots of exercises so that you can find an aerobic activity that you love so you will stick to it. This will let you try out many different aerobic exercises and discover which ones you like.
